Clowance with her first foal, a colt by Oasis Dream that was born 36 hours ago at her owner Barry Hurley's stud.  So pleased that she was not sold at Newmarket's December sales to go to Japan !

REVIEW OF 2011 - THREE YEAR OLDS

CAPTAIN CAT (IRE)    - (Dylan Thomas ex Mother Of Pearl)  TF Rating 64p     I am grateful to  www.timeform.com

He is a very big gelding who has grown a lot during the year and now measures 16.1.50 hh. He is from the first crop of Dylan Thomas out of Mother Of Pearl who was a Gr 3 winner and placed 2nd in the Musidora Gr 3 at York. She is now the dam of 4 winners from 5 runners including Danehill's Pearl, who won a Listed race in France and the good handicapper Pearly King. He made his debut in the Autumn over a mile at Newbury and lead the field until tiring in the closing stages to finish 5th to his stable companion Waterclock. He is bred to stay at least a mile and a quarter and is open to plenty of improvement as the season progresses.

ESTRELA    -  (Authorized ex Wannabe Grand)   TF Rating 93p

She is from Authorized first crop out of the good race mare Wannabe Grand who won the Cheveley Park Stakes Gr 1 and was 2nd in the 1,000 Guineas.  She ran for the first time at Salisbury at the end of September over a mile  to finish a close up 5th to Oxford Charley having been drawn wide. In her second race she put up a much better effort when winning a 17 runner race at Newbury in October by 4 1/2 lengths from Westwiththenight, she was always travelling well in front before drawing clear.  It will be interesting to see whether she can stay beyond a mile as her pedigree sends out mixed signals with a combination of stamina and speed. She is a half sister to 6 winners including King Of Argos and Wannabe King and I hope she will be up to contesting Black Type races during the season.

INCHINA    - (Montjeu ex Incheni)   TF Rating 76p

She is from a family that I know quite well, having trained several of her relations including the dual Group winning and successful sire Inchinor who is a half brother to her dam Incheni. She made her debut at Newbury in a maiden race for fillies over a mile in October and I thought that she put up a very encouraging effort to finish a length and a half 3rd of 15 to Shirocco Star, having shown signs of inexperience before staying on well. Being by Montjeu, out of a mare by Nashwan,  she should stay a mile and a half.

MINCE     - (Medicean ex Strut)   TF Rating 91p

She is a strong and good bodied Medicean filly out of Strut who had plenty of speed and won 3 of her 11 starts including the St Hugh's Stakes, a Listed race over 5 furlongs. She missed the break in her first race at Newbury in July, but she followed up in September by winning a 6 furlong maiden on the same course with her ears pricked. She was perhaps fortunate to be given a handicap rating of 70 which enabled her to win a Nursery at Pontefract by 5 lengths from See Clearly. She was always travelling strongly that day and quickened well to lead a furlong out before being eased close home. She was probably unsuited to the drop back to 5 furlongs on heavy ground at Haydock later in the month where she was beaten a nose by Ballesteros.  She has a relaxed temperament and I hope that in time she will be capable of contesting Listed races over 6 or 7 furlongs, but with a handicap mark of 85 she is likely to start her 2012 campaign in a valuable sprint handicaps for three year olds.

MOIDORE   - (Galileo ex Flash Of Gold)    TF Rating 88p

He is a very elegant and athletic son of the amazing Galileo but he can be a little highly strung at times and I hope that he will mature mentally with more racing. He is a half brother to 3 winners including the useful 7 furlong winner Firestreak and his dam Flash Of Gold stayed a mile and a half.  He ran 3 times and on each occasion showed improvement and in his last race he won a 12 runner maiden at Nottingham in October by 5 lengths from Aleksandar.  He should be open to further improvement especially when going up in distance to 12 furlongs and he starts the season with a BHA rating of 78.

NEWNTON LODGE (Rail Link ex Widescreen)    TF Rating  93

He is a big strong deep colt from the first crop of the Juddmonte stallion Rail Link who is a son of Dansili and won the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe in 2006. His dam Widescreen was unraced but she is a half sister to Zafonic and Zamindar.  He created a favourable impression when he won a 10 runner 7 furlong maiden race first time out at Sandown by a length from Kid Suitor in September. In his second race, a novice at Leicester, he ran rather disappointingly but he may have been unsuited to wearing a hood. He is a sensitive colt at home and he can get upset by strong winds on the gallops so he often exercises in a hood but I hope that he can develop into a nice colt.

PRICELESS JEWEL  - (Selkirk ex My Branch)    TF Rating 80p

She has grown more than 2 inches during the year and she has developed into an attractive filly with plenty of character. In her second start at Newbury she showed considerable improvement when winning a 9 runner maiden race by two and a quarter lengths from Tawaasul.  She was always travelling well in front and quickened up to go clear in the closing stages.  Her dam My Branch was 3rd in the Irish 1000 Guineas and her best progeny to date was Tante Rose who won the Haydock Sprint Cup Gr 1 for her owner and trainer in 2009. She showed plenty of speed when winning over 6 furlongs at Newbury but her pedigree would suggest that she could stay a mile and there should be plenty to look forward to from her during the season.

REX IMPERATOR (Royal Applause ex Elidore)   TF Rating 98p

He is a gelding with plenty of speed in his pedigree being by Royal Applause out of Elidore who was rated 95 and by the speed influence Danetime. He showed useful form during the season winning a weak maiden race at Nottingham in August by 7 lengths from Heartsong. He also produced several other creditable efforts but his best performance came at Ascot in the Cornwallis Stakes G 3, where having badly missed the break, he was beaten 3 1/4 lengths 5th of 16 to Ponty Acclaim.  It can be difficult for three year olds sprinters to find winning opportunities due to the lack of suitable races but I hope he will develop into a decent horse capable of running in Group races before the end of the year.

ROSSLYN CASTLE  (Selkirk ex Margarula)  TF Rating  82p

He made a very promising debut (40/1) at Sandown in September and although he showed inexperience, he ran on well up the hill to be beaten a length and three quarters 4th of 11 to Open Water.  He unfortunately suffered from a bad bout of ringworm which prevented him from running again before the end of the season.  Being by Selkirk, and out of Margarula who won the Irish Oaks he should improve and stay 10 to 12 furlongs.

SILVER LIME (USA) -  (Mizzen Mast ex Red Dot)    TF Rating 79p

He is by the Juddmonte stallion Mizzen Mast (USA) who is now getting plenty of high class winners and his dam Red Dot is a half sister to Flute (USA) who won the Kentucky Oaks amongst other good races in America. He is also from the family that has produced  Brian Boru, the St Leger winner and more recently Workforce. His first race at Sandown in September was full or promise and he went on to win a 7 runner 8 furlong maiden race at Ffos Las by a head from Journalistic on very heavy ground in October. He should stay at least 10 furlongs and win more races I hope.

TIOMAN LEGEND(Kyllachy ex Elegant Times)   TF Rating 93+

He had a small setback during the summer and he was subsequently gelded and given plenty of time.  He is a deep, strong horse by Kyllachy out of Elegant Times who was a half sister to the good sprinters Welsh Emperor, Majestic Times, and Brave Prospector. Having made his debut in April, he won a weak maiden race at Lingfield in May very easily by 5 lengths from Red Socks.  The form of his 3rd and final race at Windsor when he was beaten 2 lengths by Charles The Great has worked quite out well. He is likely to be suited by sprint distances and starts the season on perhaps a rather high BHA rating of 94.

TOP OFFER -   (Dansili ex Zante)    TF Rating 96P

He is a really exciting prospect  with a physique, pedigree and temperament to give him a great chance in the future. He was 6/4 favourite  when he made an impressive debut in August when winning a 15 runner 7 furlong maden race at Newbury by three and a half lengths from Pulverize, displaying a good turn of foot and drawing clear without coming under any strong pressure.  A few weeks later he unfortunately got loose returning to the yard and injured himself which prevented him from running again before the end of the season. The form of his maiden race was not particularly strong and he still has a lot to prove to justify his current price of 16/1 for the 2000 Guineas. His home work before his first race with older horses had been very encouraging and he is blessed with a fluent action. His dam Zante is by Zafonic and she won the Upavon Listed Fillies Stakes at Salisbury and finished 5th in the Nassau Stakes Gr 1. She comes from a very good family which has produced the Group 1 winners, El Gran Senor (USA), Peeping Fawn (USA), Blush With Pride (USA), Xaar and the future Group 1 winners (I hope), Bated Breath and Cityscape!  Fingers crossed he can be another exciting colt for Juddmonte Farms.

TRADER JACK(Trade Fair ex Azeema)   TF Rating 81p

He is a big strong colt by Trade Fair measuring over 16 hh and out of a half sister to Al Kazeem. He showed plenty of promise in his first race at Newbury on 21st October and having missed the break he was beaten three and a half lengths 3rd of 14 to Assizes.  He confirmed his debut promise when winning a 12 runner 8 furlong maiden race at Ffos Las by three and a half lengths from Lycidas who went on to win his next start at Wolverhampton.  The ground was heavy at Ffos Las and the majority had not run before so he probably had a big advantage but he drew clear under a hands and heels ride and he could develop into a useful prospect.

WATERCLOCK -   (Notnowcato ex Waterfall One)   TF Rating 91p

He won a 12 runner 8 furlong maiden race at Newbury in October by a short head from Hefner and at odds of 25/1,  he was one of the first horses off the bridle but he kept responding well to lead approaching the final furlong.  His pedigree suggests that he should stay a mile and a half being out of a mare by Nashwan who was a daughter of Spout, who won the Lancashire Oaks and John Porter Stakes, both Gr 3's for the owner and trainer in 1996.  His sire Notnowcato had 24 two year old runners from his first crop and 8 individual winners and Waterclock had the highest rating (BHA 84), he is likely to start in handicaps.

Review of 2011

Last season was a record year for Beckhampton with our total prize money reaching nearly 1.4 million pounds which included £685,000 earned overseas and was 20% better than our previous record in 2003. We had 47 winners (including our first bumper winner Keys) at a strike rate of 20% and included 17 races won by the two year olds which is encouraging for the future. The punters should also have been happy as a pound staked on every runner from the yard would have yielded a profit of £18. In many ways it was also a season of "near misses" which included no less than five Gr 1 seconds which was just a little frustrating. Cityscape became the star of the yard with earnings for the season of £520,000 from five different countries.

AL KAZEEM 4c - (Dubawi ex Kazeem)   TF Rating 117        A big thank you to  www.timeform.com

He developed into a smart colt during the season and his handicap rating went up by 20lbs reflecting the vast improvement that he made from his first race in April. He 'made all' in a valuable handicap at Newbury in May and then put up an even better performance in his next three starts finishing second in the Great Voltigeur Gr 2, the Arc Trial Gr 3, and the St Simon Stakes Gr 3. Perhaps on the last two occasions at Newbury he was unlucky to come up against Green Destiny and Beaten Up who both look potential Group 1 winners. His looks are matched by an excellent pedigree and I see no reason why he won't continue to make progress as a four year old over distances from 10 to 12 furlongs and it will be disappointing if he does not get a deserved first success in at least one Group race this year.

BATED BREATH  5h -  (Dansili ex Tantina)      TF Rating 125

He had an excellent year winning a minor event at Haydock by half a length from Society Rock and a Listed race at Windsor in May. For a moment I thought that he was going to win the July Cup Gr 1, when he surged up the hill but in the end was beaten half a length by Dream Ahead. He followed up with another gallant second in the Haydock Sprint Gr 1 when he was beaten a nose or in old money, the shortest of shortheads! We decided to swerve Champions Day at Ascot in October and head to Woodbine for the Nearctic Stakes Gr1, where he ran another marvellous race but on unsuitably soft ground to be beaten a neck by Regally Ready (USA), who went on to win the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint Gr 1. Bated Breath has become a very tough and high class sprinter and he has taken his long overseas trips in his stride. The journey to Hong Kong took nearly 24 hours and with a better draw, he could well have finished in the first three in the H K Sprint Gr 1. I am delighted that he remains in training as a 5 year old and he will be aimed at all the top sprints and it will be interesting to see whether Black Caviar is as formidable in Europe as she has been in Australia.

CAMBERLEY TWO 4g - (Invincible Spirit ex Diamond Line)    TF Rating 94

I think he holds the record for Beckhampton having won 6 handicaps in a row during the summer. He proved himself to be tough and genuine having been rather thick and a bit of a slow learner as a two year old. His rating has gone from 52 to 85, but I hope that he continues to improve when he is campaigned over 10 furlongs this summer.

CITYSCAPE 6h -  (Selkirk ex Tantina)        TF Rating 126

He is a very useful and high class performer who has run consistently throughout the season in five different countries. Earlier in the season I was concerned about racing him on fast ground but he coped well on good to firm ground both in Milan and Hong Kong. Although he won the Solonaway Stakes at the Curragh and the Prix Perth at Saint-Cloud, both Gr 3's with ease, his finest effort this year was when he was beaten two and three quarter lengths 3rd of 7 to Canford Cliffs and Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes Gr 1 at Royal Ascot. He continues in training this season and there remains a possibility of him going to Dubai for their World Cup meeting at Meydan on 31st March to run in the Dubai Duty Free Gr 1. He will be campaigned in Europe in races where he is unlikely to clash with Frankel, being in the same ownership. Like his half brother Bated Breath, he is a tough and wonderful horse to train and deserves to win an elusive Gr 1 race which was so nearly his in the Hong Kong Mile recently.

CRY FURY 5g - (Beat Hollow ex Cantanta)     TF Rating 104

He is a lightly raced useful handicapper having won his maiden at Kempton in April and a decent handicap at Goodwood in August. He showed his inexperience in the Cambridgeshire and having been gelded in the Autumn, I hope that he can progress over 10 and 12 furlongs as his pedigree would suggest, being by Juddmonte's Beat Hollow from a good staying family.

DEFINIGHTLY 6g -   (Diktat ex Perfect Night)      TF Rating 116

He was limited to five races as there seemed to be a shortage of soft or heavy ground when we needed it. Unfortunately, he is not the same horse unless the ground is to his liking. He was Gr 3 placed both in Ireland and France (twice) and in the process earned nearly £34,000. This year he will campaigned in Condition races as well as Listed races and Group races over 5 or 6 furlongs anywhere in Europe as he is such a good traveller.

GENKI (IRE) 8g -  (Shinko Forest ex Emma's Star)         TF Rating 120

He continues to be a smart performer having won a Listed race at Newmarket in April and the Chipchase Stakes Gr 3 at Newcastle in June. He probably produced his best efforts when 4th in the Prix Maurice De Gheest Gr 1 at Deauville to be beaten four and a quarter lengths by Moonlight Cloud and in the Haydock Sprint Gr 1 to be beaten a length and a quarter by Dream Ahead and Bated Breath. He has always been a charming character, full of life and a bit of a show off most of the time and it will be very rewarding for his owners if he could continue to compete in the better races aged 8.

PRIMEVERE (IRE) 4m -   (Singspiel ex Tree Peony)   TF Rating 108

She is a scopey and lightly raced filly and I hope that by keeping her in training as a four year old she will repay her owner/breeder Anthony Oppenheimer by winning at least one Group race. She broke the course record first time out at Kempton over a mile as a two year old and also again at Salisbury this year in the Upavon Stakes a Listed race in August. She stays a mile and a quarter really well and being by Singspiel, there is a chance that 12 furlongs will be within her capabilities. Having only raced seven times, there is every reason to think that there should be more improvement to come.

PROPONENT (IRE) 8g -  (Peintre Celebre - Pont Audemer)        TF Rating 109

He is a very useful and consistent handicapper who was better than ever last year being placed three times including being 2nd beaten a neck by Boom and Bust in the Totesport Mile at Goodwood and a length and three quarters 3rd of 32 in the Cambridgeshire to Prince of Johanne. He has now won £132,000 of which £80,000 was place money. His consistency has never enabled the handicapper to drop him but he is the perfect horse to take his owner to the big race meetings with a chance. He suffers from a breathing problem together with surviving major surgery as a three year old when part of his intestines were removed. He remains in training for another season but it maybe difficult for him to build on some of his past performances off his highest ever handicap rating of 103.

SEA OF HEARTBREAK (IRE) 5m -  (Rock Of Gibraltar ex Top Forty)    TF Rating 113

She is a wonderful mare to have in training, consistent, genuine, tough and certainly beautiful in my eyes. She has now won 6 of her 15 races and only been out of the money twice, her rating went from 70 to 90 as a three year old and from 90 to 108 as a four year old. She is a smart performer and won a Listed race at Newbury by a length and a quarter from Mirror Lake in July and the Qatar Prix de Royallieu Gr 2 at Longchamp by half a length from Miss Crissy in October. She was perhaps a little unlucky not to have been Gr 1 placed behind Miss Keller in the E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine as she was staying on well from last place to finish 5th beaten a length and a half by the winner. She would have been in great demand had she gone to the December Sales at Newmarket as a broodmare and racing prospect, but her owner Liz Hardisty I hope has made the right decision to keep her in training for another season. Although she will have a Gr 2 penalty there are plenty of exciting races for older fillies to contest in Europe, America, Canada and Japan for good prize money. She will need to improve again as a five year old to win a Gr 1 race but there should be plenty of opportunities for her to be at least placed. Her first race in 2012 could be in the Middleton Stakes Gr 2 at York in May or in the Prix Corrida Gr 2 at Saint-Cloud.

THISTLE BIRD 4m -  (Selkirk ex Dolma)      TF Rating 105

She was unraced as a two year old and won 2 of her 6 starts, showing improvement with each race until being slightly disappointing when moved up to 10 furlongs behind Principal Role in a Listed race at Newmarket in October. Being by Selkirk whose progeny tend to improve with time and out of the tough mare Dolma who won 6 of her 20 starts, I think that there is reason to be optimistic that she could impove and gain some black type during the year. She is a tough filly who can have her tricky moments both on and off the racecouse.

ZERO MONEY (IRE) 6g -  (Bachelor Duke ex Dawn Chorus)    TF Rating 108

He has developed into a useful handicapper particularly after blinkers were applied, winning at Newmarket in July and Haydock at his first attempt over 5 furlongs in September. In his first attempt in a Listed race, he put up a respectable effort to be beaten a length and a half 5th of 16 to Move In Time at Ascot in October. He needs fast ground to be seen at his best as demonstrated by his run in Dubai recently.

FRIDAY 6/1/2012

Zero Money was perhaps a little disappointing yesterday, not showing the speed to dominate the race but he was unsuited to the ground which was described as being loose on top and firm underneath after recent watering.  I am sure that he will have benefitted from the race as he had a good blow afterwards and we will look at the various options for him in the future, either on the Tapeta and over 6 furlongs.

Thursday 5/1/2012

Zero Money (Ire) runs in the 4.20pm at Meydan this afternoon, a 5 furlong sprint handicap for horses rated 100 - 110. There are 11 runners and he is drawn 10 and will be ridden by James Doyle. He is our first runner in Dubai since Proponent ran in the Spring of 2010. He seems to have settled into a good routine, but he may well improve for the race. I was a little alarmed to hear that the ground was riding on the soft side on Wednesday morning and that the sprinklers have been applied since then as he loves fast ground.

SATURDAY 31/12/11

Zero Money was ridden by James Doyle this morning in his last piece of fast work before his race on Thursday and he reported that he felt well and ready for his race. James is riding very well and he rode a double yesterday and I understand that he is currently leading rider at Meydan and Jebel Ali on 14 winners.

Next week I hope to start my review of 2011 and giving my thoughts and plans for the horses for the coming season and our list of two year olds that have recently arrived.....exciting times ahead.....I hope !

WEDNESDAY 28/12/2011

Not a lot to report over the Christmas weekend, the horses had an extra day off on Boxing Day so went on the horse walker instead. On Tuesday morning they were all naturally very fresh but luckily nothing got loose and the morning passed off without an incidence.  Zero Money has now been in Dubai since 16th December and he is gradually adapting to his new environment. He can be a little highly strung at times and he tends to be a free sweater but he's improving and settling better each day. He is due to work on Saturday with a view to running in an International Rated Stakes (5 furlong Handicap) with a value of $120,000 on Thursday next week, their opening day of The Dubai Carnival.
