Sugar Beet ran in a good race at Ffos Las although she was beaten 8 lengths to finish 3rd. The winner Brevity went on to win the Dick Poole Listed race for fillies last week and her rating was raised 18 to 103 and as Sugar Beet is rated 62 and due to rise 3lbs later this week she ought to be capable of running well. Faster ground would suit her better and perhaps another furlong.
Our runners at Epsom were all a little disappointing with perhaps excuses for Goldtrek who did not seem to appreciate the cut in the ground. Luckily Home Advantage saved the day when winning the 8.50pm race at Kempton in good style under Richard Hughes. It is a big pat on the back for everybody in the yard as this was his fourth handicap victory of the season. No doubt in Sir Mark Prescott's yard this is a daily occurrence but nonetheless it makes us feel good down here.
Embezzle's owner Bjorn Nielsen has always wanted to win the Epsom Derby but unfortunately his Sadler's Wells gelding Embezzle will struggle to win his maiden at the course today. He is a very slow learner but I hope he will improve from his rather dismal show at Ffos Las, the penny just has not really dropped yet but in time it will.
Goldtrek has had a good season so far winning 3 races and running well at Salisbury last time but getting tired in the closing stages having had a break. Ideally she is suited by fast ground so a decision about her participation will be made nearer the time.
Yabtree I hope will be suited by the blinkers and a drop back to 7 furlongs and another win from him is due.
Home Advantage has had a nice break since his slightly disappointing effort at Newmarket, he is in good form and as long as he is suited to the polytrack at Kempton he should run well.
Yesterdays runner Love Match was a non runner due to the rain softened ground but may run at Sandown on Saturday instead.
Love Match is having her 7th race of the year having been in the money on every occasion except first time out at Kempton in the Spring. She is a very consistent and tough filly who is suited to a fast run 7 furlongs. Todays race has alot of runners with several having good chances.
GENKI - I was thrilled with his run yesterday in the Haydock Sprint as he had had so many problems with his back since the Stewards Cup. He has been receiving constant attention from Nicole Rossa our McTimoney Chiropracter and from Becky Dean who practices Equine Shiatsu. Also Tom Grantham, my assistant and his lad Jeta spend many hours walking him and stretching his legs and back to keep him supple. I wasn't sure that he was up to running in a Group 1 but his owner Gill Khosla was right in persuading me that there was nothing to be lost and plenty to be gained. This morning he was trotted up sound but we will not really know how he is until he is ridden again this week. The Ayr Gold Cup remains on his agenda off a rating of 103 having run in the Stewards Cup off 106 and imagine the handicapper could raise him to 108/110. A decision about his participation will be taken nearer the time.
CITYSCAPE - I was very proud of him as well, he put up such a game performance to stretch away in the closing stages. It is exactly two years since he won his last race and there have been a few problems along the way for us to deal with. Let's hope that he is now back on track and can show his full potential this Autumn. At this stage I think that it is unlikely that he will run in the Cambridgeshire where he will receive a 4lb penalty raising his weight to 9st 12lb. I have always thought that you need a Group horse to win the Cambridgeshire, for example Blue Monday, but the first prize of £100,000 is very tempting. I will be having a discussion during the week with The Prince and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe to decide whether a Group race is a more sensible progression.
WALCOT SQUARE - winning at Wolverhampton last night was a great ending to "a good day in the office" although his victory as favourite was very narrow! It was good to win another race for De La Warr racing, who are a great group of racing enthusiasts, and occasionally enjoy a small bet!
They started the gallop in thick fog but emerged to finish in good visibility. The sun came out as they returned to the yard to yet another beautiful sunny day.
